Matisse paintings are now in the public domain

June 14, 2023

Lately I came across this article explaining Matisse is now public domain.

Wow.

‘In order to determine whether a painting is in the public domain, you have to consider the date it was created in. Generally speaking, any work that was created before January 1, 1923, is considered to be in the public domain and can be used without obtaining permission from the artist or copyright holder.

As of January 1st 2021, works by Matisse and other renowned artists including Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, M. C. Escher, Max Ernst, and Constantin Brancusi are all now considered to be part of the public domain. This means that they are no longer subject to copyright restrictions, so anyone can use them freely without worrying about infringing any intellectual property rights. ‘

Personally, reading about public domain sent me down the rabbit hole of the various museum collections all across the net. I couldn’t grasp the richness.
