Grid based work is playful. It is self explanatory so if you are a lover of math poetry, jump right in.
We are counting the building blocks in our structure, and play with repetition and variation again.
Like playing lego, minecraft or embroidery work.
The main challenge here is technical, how to use a grid as a base without showing it in the work itself.
Here are few options :
Create a grid with an HB pencil, these are light and can be easily erased. The idea here is to work with a marker for the actual drawing and erase the pencil afterwards.
work on a window. Tape a grid paper to a window during the day, and tape your work sheet on top of it. You can even use a smaller grid and move it around under the paper
Use a light box. Light boxes are vintage products that still get sold in certain art stores. if you can’t find one in the size you want, simply build one by placing a light source behind a plexiglas.
Use a dotted notebook or a grid paper from the art store.
In the video above I placed a neon light behind an old frame with a plexiglass surface to create a vertical ‘light box’
